Thank You.

Following my latest blog post (https://natalieeeha.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/dear-pm/), I have decided to compose a Thank You note for our modern-day heroes.

Racial slurs and highly exaggerated accusations in Malaysia’s mainstream media has turned us into a divided nation. In wake of these heartbreaking events, many have turned to social media to express their views and opinions regarding what has gone down since the 13th General Election.

What I find on my Facebook news feed is astounding. From shared posts that show screenshots of Facebook users threatening to slaughter the Chinese like pigs, to raising suggestions that the Chinese in this country be eliminated, even if it means bloodshed. As a Chinese, this is extremely terrifying and saddening.

However, my heart swells with pride when I see people of all other races coming to our defense and aid. Those who defend the Chinese in their Facebook statuses or tweets, regardless of race. Those who offer comfort to us and telling us that we are never alone. These are our modern day heroes; those who aren’t afraid to speak up for what is right.

To those who have done so publicly, I thank you. You have given me hope that one day, Malaysia will change for the better. You have given me so many reasons to believe that 1Malaysia is real and that it lives in our hearts. I applaud you for your bravery to stand up for what is right. And with that, I regard you as my brothers and sisters, even though I have never met you.

This photo was taken just last year during our Merdeka celebration in school. We were, are and always will be a family, regardless of race, religion and the colour of our skin. Nothing will change the solidarity we have, and my hope is that slowly, we will spread the love among other Malaysians too.

I remember being enthralled with the written word ever since my parents started reading fairytales to me at a young age. Seeing the power it has to influence behaviours and mindsets, I have learned, over the years, to translate my thoughts onto paper, in an attempt to positively disrupt the lives of others. Having my written works published in various forms of media has empowered me to weave stories that people can resonate with. I look forward to the life-long process of perfecting this craft, and hope to see my work touch the hearts of many in the future. This blog attempts to do just that - and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy penning it down.
